On Sunday 25th November 2013 Ben Moyes, a 14 year old member of Stowmarket Golf Club, showed some class by winning the 13th Stonham Players Championship by 6 shots from last year’s winner Ryan Turnbull, an 11 year old from Cretingham Golf Club. His score of 30 (one over par) was fantastic in the cold conditions and included two birdies and a marvellous up and down from 40 yards on the 9th hole for a par 3. Ben, a 19 handicap junior at Stowmarket Golf Club, has come through the Suffolk Junior Development Squad Programme and is coached by Tony Dobson at Stonham Barns. This was the last of eight events this year for juniors from 5-14 years old. There was a good turnout considering the weather with juniors from 10 different clubs including players from Norfolk and Cambridge. In the Age categories the Under 12’s was won by Ryan Turnbull (36), the Under 10’s was won by 10 year old Mary Cuthbert from Thorpness (37) and the Under 8’s was won by 7 year old Henry Meadows from Fynn Valley Golf Club. The organizer of the event PGA Professional Tony Dobson said “I would like to thanks all the juniors that made the effort to play in this event and all the juniors that have supported the events this year.” He added “I would also like to thank Mike Stevenson, the Chairman of Suffolk Junior Golf, for coming along to support the event and presenting the prizes.” Stonham Barns have been running Junior Tournaments since 2001 and currently run 8 events through the year for youngsters to experience playing in Junior Golf Tournaments in a friendly relaxed environment. All juniors from 4 to 15 years old (boys and girls) are welcome to play whatever their standard or ability. The events are usually the last Sunday of each month from April to November and feature the Stonham U12 Junior Flag Tournament in May, the East Anglian Under 12 Junior Golf Championship in June and the Stonham Barns Players Championship in November. There are prizes for all the different age categories, Under 8, Under 10, Under 12 and Under 15. The Under 10 Age Group was won by another Stonham Barns player, Jack Harris, a 9 year old in only his second junior tournament.
